5-Day Skardu Itinerary: Lakes, Deserts and Shigar in One Loop

Short Answer

This 5-day Skardu itinerary is a loop, not a list: Skardu town first, then the lakes to the west, then Shigar Valley, then Khaplu in the east, then back to Skardu for departure. That order matters because Shigar sits about 30 km from Skardu on the way to nowhere else, while Khaplu is 103 km east — so you visit Shigar on the way out and Khaplu as the far point, instead of crossing Skardu twice for both. Total driving is roughly 300 km, the longest single leg is the 3–4-hour Skardu–Khaplu drive, and every night is booked where you end the day, not where you started it.

Day 1: Why start with Skardu town itself?

Most itineraries rush out of Skardu town on arrival day; this one does the opposite. Skardu sits at about 2,226 m, so Day 1 is your acclimatisation day: Kharpocho Fort (Skardu Fort) above the town in the morning, the bazaar in the afternoon, and the Indus River at sunset. Kharpocho, built in the 16th century on a rock above the Indus, is the town’s best viewpoint and its best history lesson in one stop — and it is walkable from most town hotels. Sleep in Skardu; the lakes can wait a day, and your body will thank you. For the town’s full activity list, see Things to Do in Skardu.

Day 2: Which lakes — Shangrila, Upper Kachura, or Satpara?

All three, in this order, because they stack by distance from town. Start with Satpara Lake, about 8 km and 20 minutes north of Skardu, for a quiet morning on the water. Then drive about 32 km, roughly an hour, to Shangrila Lake (Lower Kachura) for lunch at the resort gardens — the famous “Heaven on Earth” lake with its beached flying-boat restaurant. Finish with Upper Kachura Lake, a short jeep climb above Shangrila, which is quieter, bluer and less manicured than its famous neighbour. Return to Skardu for the night; the lakes are a day trip, not a base change.

Day 3: Why is Shigar the valley you sleep in, not just visit?

Drive roughly 30 km, about an hour, to Shigar Valley — and stay the night, because Shigar rewards an evening that day-trippers miss. Shigar Fort, the 17th-century Amacha-dynasty palace restored between 1999 and 2004 and now partly a heritage hotel, is the morning stop; the Amburiq Mosque, one of the oldest wooden mosques in Baltistan, is the afternoon one. At sunset, drive to the Katpana Cold Desert, the high-altitude sand dunes just outside Skardu’s orbit that most visitors photograph without ever understanding: cold desert at over 2,000 m, with the Karakoram behind it. Sleeping in Shigar also positions you for Khaplu without backtracking through Skardu town traffic. The full valley story is in the Shigar Valley guide.

Day 4: Is Khaplu worth the 103 km drive?

Yes — and it is the day the loop earns its name. The drive from Shigar to Khaplu runs about 103 km from Skardu, 3–4 hours along the Shyok River, through gorge country that gets more dramatic as you go east. Khaplu Palace, the former Yabgo Raja’s residence above terraced orchards, is the afternoon’s centrepiece, and the Chaqchan Mosque, one of Baltistan’s oldest mosques, is the second stop. Sleep in Khaplu: the town’s guesthouses and the palace hotel are the reward for the long drive, and morning light on the palace orchards is the photograph day-trippers miss. See the Khaplu Valley guide for the town in full.

Day 5: How do you close the loop?

Drive back to Skardu in the morning — 103 km, 3–4 hours — and keep the afternoon deliberately light: a final bazaar walk, a last Indus viewpoint, and an early night or onward flight. Skardu’s airport is weather-dependent, so if you are flying out, this buffer afternoon matters more than any extra sight. If you have a sixth day, spend it on Deosai instead of squeezing it into this loop: the park entrance is about 30 km and 1.5–2 hours by 4×4 from Skardu, and Sheosar Lake is roughly 60 km and 3 or more hours in — a full day on its own, covered in the Deosai National Park guide. For the wider logistics, see How to Get to Skardu.

Practical tips for the 5-day Skardu itinerary

  • Fly in, drive out — or the reverse, never both by road in 5 days: Skardu’s flight saves a day each way, but cancellations are common, so keep Day 5’s afternoon free as flight insurance.
  • Book Khaplu before you leave Skardu: Khaplu has far fewer rooms than Skardu, and arriving without a booking risks a forced return drive in the dark.
  • A normal car handles Shigar; Khaplu wants a good driver: The Shigar road is sealed, but the Shyok gorge road to Khaplu rewards a driver who knows its narrow stretches and checkpoints.
  • Carry cash from Skardu: Shigar and Khaplu have limited card payment options, and small-town ATMs are unreliable.
  • Pack for desert sun and 2,200 m nights: The Katpana dunes are hot by day and the nights are cold — layers, sun protection and a water filter cover both. See What to Pack for Northern Pakistan and the Sawyer Squeeze for lake and stream water on day walks.
  • Visas and permits: Baltistan’s open valleys need only the standard tourist e-visa for most foreign visitors; the general position is in the Pakistan Tourist Visa Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5 days enough for Skardu?

Yes for the classic loop: Skardu town, the three lakes, Shigar Fort and the Katpana desert, and Khaplu Palace. Five days does not cover Deosai or a K2 trek — those need their own days, and squeezing Deosai into this loop is the most common way to ruin it.

Why visit Shigar before Khaplu?

Shigar is roughly 30 km from Skardu while Khaplu is 103 km east, so Shigar first and Khaplu second means you never cross Skardu twice for the same valley. Reversing the order adds a wasted return leg and turns the Khaplu day into a rushed there-and-back drive.

How long is the drive from Skardu to Khaplu?

About 103 km and 3–4 hours along the Shyok River, depending on road conditions and the Ghowari checkpoint. It is a full morning’s drive, which is why this itinerary sleeps in Khaplu rather than attempting it as a day trip.

Can a normal car reach Shigar and Khaplu?

Shigar’s road is sealed and a normal car handles it comfortably. The Khaplu road is also passable by car in normal conditions, but its gorge stretches and checkpoints make a local driver the safer choice, especially after rain or in fading light.

Should you add Deosai to a 5-day Skardu trip?

Only as a sixth day. The park entrance is about 30 km and 1.5–2 hours by 4×4 from Skardu, and Sheosar Lake is roughly 60 km and 3 or more hours in, so Deosai is a full day on its own — not an afternoon add-on to the Skardu lakes day.
