World Culture Festival 2026 Opens in Karachi — 150 Countries, 25 Days

The third edition of the World Culture Festival (WCF 2026), organised by the Arts Council of Pakistan in Karachi, formally starts on Friday 30 October 2026. Arts Council president Mohammad Ahmed Shah announced the opening at a soft-launch press conference on Thursday evening, alongside Sindh Culture Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah and the first batch of international artists who have already arrived in Karachi.

This year’s festival runs for 25 days with artists from 150 countries taking part. More than 80 films, selected from 6,000 entries from around the world, will be screened, and the line-up includes Grammy-winning musicians and Oscar-nominated artists. Shah said the council’s international partners have grown from half a dozen last year — including the Goethe Institut and Alliance Française — to 72 this year, and that 22 government departments are supporting the event. The 2025 edition ran for 39 days with 140 countries; this time, Shah said, “we became choosy.”

The festival’s stated themes are inclusion, pluralism and global peace, with artists from countries including America, Russia, Palestine and Iran appearing, and panel discussions on subjects such as artificial intelligence and the future of creative work. The press conference was to be followed by a qawwali by Hamza Akram.

What it means for travellers

Karachi is not on the usual Gilgit-Baltistan itinerary, but a 25-day international festival is a genuine reason to add a stopover at the start or end of a Pakistan trip — especially for travellers flying in or out through Karachi. It also changes the city’s cultural calendar for the next few weeks: venues, hotels near the Arts Council and evening events will be busier than usual, so book early if you plan to attend.

For GB-bound travellers, the practical point is sequencing. A Karachi festival stop works best as a bookend to a northern trip, not as a detour in the middle of it: northern routes, passes and flights run on their own weather-driven timetable, and squeezing a Karachi visit between mountain legs adds backtracking. If you are already in Pakistan in late October or November, check the festival programme before you fix your Karachi dates.

What to watch

  • The full festival programme and ticketing: which performances are open to the public and which need advance booking.
  • Hotel and venue demand around the Arts Council in Karachi over the 25 days.
  • Whether any GB or northern-Pakistan artists or ensembles appear in the programme — worth a follow-up for readers combining culture with a northern trip.
