Thailand Cuts Its 2026 Arrivals Forecast — But Hotels and Airlines Keep Building

Thailand’s international arrivals are falling short again, and the government has cut its 2026 arrivals forecast from 36.7 million to 33 million, according to Skift’s report published 30 October 2026. The 2027 target is “at least 33 million” — carrying this year’s reduced ambition into next year rather than promising a rebound.

The report’s central tension is that hotel developers and airlines are still expanding even as arrivals disappoint. That raises questions about the demand assumptions behind the new rooms and seats now coming online. The exposure is uneven: Bangkok’s luxury hotels are outperforming, while Phuket faces a wave of new openings that will have to compete harder for guests.

What it means for travellers

For travellers, a forecast cut paired with continued building usually means one thing: more choice and softer pricing outside the strongest segments. If you are planning a Thailand trip — a common add-on for travellers routing through Asia before or after Pakistan — Bangkok luxury stays look resilient, while Phuket’s incoming supply could mean better deals and more availability, especially outside peak weeks.

The caution is on the other side of the same coin. New rooms do not guarantee full services, and a market building ahead of demand can also mean newly opened hotels still finding their feet. Check recent reviews for any property that has just opened, and treat “new” as a reason to verify, not as a guarantee.

What to watch

  • Whether Thailand’s arrivals recover toward the revised 33 million figure by year-end, or fall short again.
  • Phuket hotel pricing and occupancy as the wave of openings lands.
  • Whether airlines trim or hold the added capacity if demand stays soft into 2027.
