Skardu Trip Cost: What a Week in Baltistan Actually Costs in 2026

Skardu is the rare Himalayan destination that is both genuinely spectacular and genuinely affordable — but only if you know where the money actually goes. The shock for most first-timers is not the hotel or the food. It is the transport: a weather-cancelled flight, a private jeep day to Deosai, a last-minute peak-season fare. Get those three right and the rest of the trip is cheap by any international standard.

I have priced this guide the way I would price my own trip: seven days, six nights, per person, twin-share rooms, jeeps split four ways, and every figure checked against 2026 sources rather than copied from an old blog. International flights into Pakistan are excluded — those vary too much by departure city to mean anything — but everything from your arrival in Pakistan onward is in here.

Short Answer

A 7-day Skardu trip, per person, excluding international flights, costs roughly:

  • Budget: $350–$450 — bus or cheapest flights, guesthouses, local food, shared jeeps.
  • Mid-range: $700–$850 — return flights, comfortable hotels, private car on paved days, one full Deosai jeep day.
  • Comfortable: $1,300–$1,600 — heritage hotels like Serena Shigar Fort or Shangrila Resort, private Prado/jeep throughout, a guide on excursion days.

The single biggest lever is how you reach Skardu: flying return from Islamabad costs roughly PKR 48,000–89,000, while the bus costs roughly PKR 8,000–12,000 return — a saving of $150–$300 per person. The second lever is the jeep: a Deosai day costs PKR 15,000–25,000 per jeep, so sharing it four ways turns a budget-breaker into a bargain.

The 7-Day Cost at a Glance

The model below assumes seven days and six nights in the Skardu region: two days around Skardu town and the Kachura lakes, one full Deosai day, one Shigar day, one Khaplu day, and one buffer/flex day (which doubles as insurance against a weather-cancelled flight). Hotel figures assume two people sharing a room; jeep figures assume four sharing a vehicle.

Budget Mid-range Comfortable
Return transport, Islamabad–Skardu $180 (cheapest flights) $235 (typical return fare) $305 (flexible/peak fares)
Accommodation, 6 nights $85 $305 $760
Food, 7 days $30 $65 $115
Local transport & excursions $45 $150 $240
Entry fees, SIM, misc $20 $30 $70
Total per person $350–$450 $700–$850 $1,300–$1,600

Totals are rounded and deliberately ranged: peak-season July–August and Eid weeks push every line toward the top of its band, while May, June, September and early October are the value windows. Treat these as planning budgets with a 10% contingency on top, not as promises.

How Much Does It Cost to Reach Skardu?

This is where budgets are won or lost, so it gets its own section.

By air: the fast, weather-prone option

Three airlines fly Islamabad–Skardu direct in about one hour: PIA, airblue and AirSial, all with early-morning departures. Fares checked on booking sites on 20 October 2026 ran: airblue roughly PKR 18,000–30,000 one way (return PKR 48,000–51,000), AirSial roughly PKR 20,000–30,000 one way (return PKR 50,000–63,000), and PIA roughly PKR 40,000 and above one way (return PKR 80,000–88,500). Aggregator snapshots the same week showed return deals from about $142. In plain terms: budget $180–$320 return, and expect the higher end in June–July and around public holidays.

The catch is weather. Skardu flights are visual-flight-rules operations in a mountain valley: low cloud cancels them, and a cancelled flight can push your return by a day or more. That is why this itinerary carries a buffer day, and why you should never book a tight international connection on your return day.

From Dubai and the Gulf

PIA relaunched direct Dubai–Skardu flights on 30 May 2025, but the service is seasonal, and by late 2026 the bookable Dubai–Skardu options showing on fare sites route via Islamabad with one stop (from around AED 488 one way). If you are coming from the Gulf, plan on Dubai–Islamabad–Skardu and check whether a seasonal direct service is operating on your dates before you assume it.

By road: the budget classic

The bus is the great equaliser. NATCO (the government carrier) and private operators run Islamabad/Rawalpindi–Skardu in roughly 18–22 hours, mostly overnight. Published NATCO fares for the Skardu route run roughly PKR 2,570–4,000 one way, and 2026 guide figures put the bus broadly at PKR 4,000–9,000 depending on class and operator — so budget roughly PKR 8,000–12,000 return per person. A private car is a different proposition: one-way hire from Islamabad runs roughly PKR 30,000–38,000 for a sedan, PKR 55,000 for a Revo and PKR 75,000 for a Prado (per vehicle, not per person, so a group of four splits it). The road journey is normally split over two days with a night in Chilas — and the scenery on the Karakoram Highway is, genuinely, free.

Getting there (per person, return unless stated) Budget Mid-range Comfortable
Flights, Islamabad–Skardu PKR 48,000–55,000 PKR 50,000–65,000 PKR 80,000–89,000
Bus, Islamabad–Skardu PKR 8,000–12,000 — —
Private car share (4 people) — PKR 14,000–19,000 PKR 31,000–38,000 (Prado share)

If you fly one way and bus the other — a common compromise — you land roughly in the middle of the flight and bus figures.

Where to Stay: What a Night in Skardu Costs

Skardu splits into three bases: Skardu town and the bazaar (logistics, cheapest), the Kachura lakes 30–40 minutes out (scenery), and the heritage valleys of Shigar and Khaplu (character, higher prices). Most first-timers do well basing in town and day-tripping out.

Tier What you get Per night (double room)
Budget guesthouse Clean, simple room, shared or basic bathroom, often family-run PKR 2,500–9,000 ($9–$32)
Mid-range hotel Comfortable room, heating, restaurant, mountain views PKR 8,000–20,000 ($29–$72)
Heritage / luxury Serena Shigar Fort, Serena Khaplu Palace, Shangrila Resort PKR 22,000–80,000 ($80–$290)

Two specifics worth knowing. Serena Shigar Fort — the restored 17th-century palace on the rock at Shigar, about 32 km and an hour from Skardu town — runs roughly PKR 22,000–30,000 per night in peak season (off-season booking-site snapshots in late October 2026 showed from about £67/$90). Shangrila Resort on Lower Kachura Lake sits in the same luxury band. And the seasonal rule is brutal: book weeks or months ahead for July, August and Eid, when prices spike; May, June, September and early October are the value windows, with the added bonus of autumn colour in the Shigar and Khaplu orchards.

Six nights at the mid-points of those bands is what feeds the headline totals: about $85 budget, $305 mid-range and $760 comfortable, per person on a twin-share basis. For the wider seasonal picture — which months reward you and which punish your wallet — our best time to visit Hunza Valley guide explains the same season logic valley by valley.

Food: The Cheapest Line in the Budget

Food is where Skardu embarrasses most mountain destinations: it is very hard to spend much.

Per person, per day
Budget: local eateries, bazaar food, chapshuro and mamtu PKR 600–1,500 ($2–$5)
Mid-range: hotel and better restaurants, one trout dish PKR 2,000–3,500 ($7–$13)
Comfortable: hotel dining, trout most days PKR 3,500–5,000 ($13–$18)

A mid-range restaurant meal runs roughly PKR 800–2,000, and the local specialty — Skardu trout — roughly PKR 1,500–2,500 a dish. Seven days at those rates gives the $30 / $65 / $115 food lines in the headline table. The honest caveat: the further you go from Skardu town (Deosai, Basho), the thinner the food options — pack snacks and water for excursion days, which is also why a power bank and a water filter earn their place in the packing list below.

Excursions: The Jeep Is the Budget

Skardu’s sights are cheap to enter and expensive to reach. That single fact shapes the excursion budget.

Deosai day trip: the big one

A full-day Deosai trip by private 4×4 from Skardu costs roughly PKR 15,000–25,000 per jeep including driver and fuel (an old Land Cruiser at the lower end, a Prado at the upper end), for a 2.5–4 hour drive each way to Sheosar Lake. Split four ways that is PKR 3,750–6,250 ($14–$23) per person — the single best value in the itinerary, provided you share. Travelling solo and paying the whole jeep yourself is the classic Skardu budget trap.

Entry fees are the one genuinely uncertain line: published figures for foreign visitors conflict wildly (roughly $10–$40 in various guides, with one 2026 guide quoting PKR 8,500). Carry cash and confirm at the gate. And note the rule that now catches returning visitors out: overnight camping in Deosai has been banned since September 2025, so Deosai is a day trip — sleep in Skardu.

Shigar and Khaplu day trips

Shigar Fort is about 32 km and an hour by sealed road — a normal car handles it, no 4×4 needed — with a modest museum ticket at the gate (about PKR 800 per person; hotel guests at Serena Shigar Fort typically enter free). A private sedan with driver for a paved-zone day runs roughly PKR 6,000–10,000, so a Shigar day and a Khaplu day together cost roughly PKR 12,000–20,000 per car, or PKR 3,000–5,000 per person four-way. Upper Kachura Lake and Shangrila Resort need only a short local ride (roughly PKR 200–500 for a short hop in town, more for a half-day hire).

Excursion (per person, 4 sharing unless stated) Cost
Deosai full-day jeep, shared PKR 3,750–6,250 ($14–$23)
Deosai park entry (foreign visitor) Confirm at gate — published figures conflict ($10–$40 range)
Shigar day by sedan, shared PKR 1,500–2,500 ($5–$9)
Khaplu day by sedan, shared PKR 1,500–2,500 ($5–$9)
Local rides, fort tickets, misc entries PKR 2,000–4,000 ($7–$14)

Cash, SIMs and the Practical Money Notes

Skardu runs on cash. ATMs exist in Skardu town but run dry in peak season, and — consistent with what our packing guide found across the north — working ATMs effectively stop at Gilgit and Skardu: do not plan on finding one in Shigar, Khaplu or Deosai. Bring enough rupees from Islamabad, in small notes, and keep a reserve for the jeep driver and park gate, both cash-only.

For connectivity, SCOM (the Special Communications Organization) is the network that actually works in Skardu town and the main valleys; buy a SCOM SIM at Skardu airport or in the bazaar against your passport and visa copy. Zong and Jazz serve the towns but thin out fast in side valleys. Budget roughly PKR 1,000–2,000 for a SIM and a week’s data.

Travel insurance is the one line budget travellers most often skip and most often regret: a serious medical emergency in Baltistan means evacuation to Islamabad. A policy with medical evacuation cover is a small fraction of the trip cost and belongs in every tier’s budget, not just the comfortable one. And if Skardu leaves you wondering what the expedition tier costs, our K2 base camp trek cost guide prices that world separately — it runs several multiples of a Skardu week.

How to Save Money Without Ruining the Trip

  • Share every jeep. The Deosai jeep is PKR 15,000–25,000 per vehicle whether one person or four rides in it. Guesthouses and Skardu bazaar noticeboards are where sharing partners are found — ask on arrival, not the morning of the trip.
  • Fly one way, bus the other. You keep the aerial arrival and save roughly $75–$150 against a full return flight.
  • Travel in the value windows. May, June, September and early October bring lower hotel rates, fewer crowds and — in autumn — golden orchards. July–August is peak price for everything.
  • Base in town, splurge on one night. A night at Serena Shigar Fort or Shangrila as a single highlight, with the rest of the week in a mid-range town hotel, buys the memory at a third of the cost of a week at luxury rates.
  • Book flights the moment dates are fixed. Skardu fares rise steeply in the last weeks before departure, and peak-season seats sell out.
  • Eat where the drivers eat. The bazaar’s chapshuro and mamtu stalls are both the best food and the cheapest; hotel restaurants are where food budgets quietly double.

Budget Traps: Where Skardu Trips Go Over Budget

  • The solo jeep. Paying a whole Deosai jeep alone is the single most common overspend — always share or join a group.
  • Last-minute flights. A peak-season fare booked days ahead can cost double the early fare, and a weather cancellation can add an unplanned hotel night.
  • Peak-season hotel rates. The same room that costs PKR 10,000 in September can cost PKR 20,000 in August. If your dates are flexible, move them.
  • The “one more valley” day. Each extra private-car day is PKR 6,000–10,000 (sedan) or PKR 15,000–25,000 (4×4). Beautiful, but it is never free.
  • Card assumptions. Assuming you can pay by card or find a working ATM outside Skardu town is how travellers end up stranded without jeep fare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Skardu expensive for foreign tourists?
No, by international mountain-destination standards it is moderate. A mid-range week runs roughly $700–$850 per person excluding international flights, with food and entry fees remarkably cheap; flights and jeep hire are where most of the money goes.

What is the cheapest way to reach Skardu?
By bus. NATCO and private coaches run Islamabad–Skardu in 18–22 hours for roughly PKR 4,000–9,000 one way, against roughly PKR 18,000–40,000 for a one-way flight. The trade-off is a full day on the road versus one hour in the air.

How much does a Deosai day trip cost?
Roughly PKR 15,000–25,000 per jeep including driver and fuel, or PKR 3,750–6,250 per person when four people share. Park entry for foreign visitors is inconsistently published, so carry cash and confirm the current fee at the gate.

Cash or card in Skardu?
Cash, in rupees. ATMs exist in Skardu town but run dry in peak season, and card acceptance outside hotels is rare. Bring enough cash from Islamabad, including small notes for drivers, gates and bazaar stalls.

How many days do you need in Skardu?
Seven days is the comfortable answer: town and Kachura lakes, a Deosai day, Shigar, Khaplu, and a buffer day for a weather-cancelled flight. Five days covers the essentials; three days only covers the sights close to town.

The Bottom Line

Skardu rewards the traveller who spends on the right things: the flight that gets you there, the shared jeep that gets you onto the plateau, and one night somewhere memorable. Everything else — the food, the forts, the lakes, the bazaar — is cheap, and the most beautiful parts of the week cost nothing at all. Budget $350–$450 if you travel lean, $700–$850 for comfort without extravagance, and $1,300–$1,600 if you want the heritage hotels and a private car throughout — and whatever tier you choose, keep a buffer day and a cash reserve. The mountains will take care of the rest.
