Cherry Blossom in Skardu Valley: Chunda, Shigar and Khaplu

Last updated: 6 November 2026

Short Answer

Cherry blossom season in Skardu Valley runs from mid-March to the end of April, with lingering blooms into early May in the higher valleys. Skardu sits higher than Hunza (around 2,228 m at the city), so its bloom runs later: the main Skardu valley peaks from mid-March to mid-April, Chunda Valley peaks from late March to early April, and Khaplu — about 100 km away along the Shyok River — blooms about two weeks later than Skardu, into late April. Almond blooms first, then plum, then cherry and apricot together, and on a good week in late March you can see six or seven varieties flowering at once.

Timing shifts 1–3 weeks with the winter — a cold winter delays the season. Treat every date in this guide as a typical range and confirm locally before you travel.

When is blossom season in Skardu?

Later than Hunza, and longer. Skardu’s altitude pushes the season back by a week or two, and the valley’s spread — from the town at 2,228 m to Hushe high above — stretches it out. The main valley peaks from mid-March to mid-April. Chunda Valley, just behind the airport and a little higher, peaks from late March to early April — it is the classic second chance if you miss the town’s peak. Khaplu, the “Valley of Gardens” in Ghanche District, blooms about two weeks after Skardu, into late April. The last week of March gives the best chance of catching several species in bloom at once, and daytime temperatures in spring run around 15–25°C.

Where are the best places to see blossom in Skardu Valley?

Chunda Valley is the valley’s blossom headline. It sits northeast of Skardu, about 45 minutes’ drive, just behind Skardu Airport. Cherry and apricot orchards line both sides of a stream, and because it is higher than the town it blooms later — if Skardu town is past its peak, Chunda is often still in full flower. Go in the morning, when the light comes down the valley.

Skardu town orchards are the easiest blossom in Baltistan — no drive, no trek, just the orchards in and around the town. The cherry trees here are the ones with coordinates on the map, and they are worth an unhurried hour, not a drive-by.

Lower Kachura Lake and Shangrila Resort give you blossom with water in the frame: the lake and the resort seen through a blossoming bough is one of the valley’s classic spring photographs.

Shigar Valley, about 30 km from Skardu, pairs apricot and cherry blossom with the Katpana Desert’s sand sitting right beside rows of fruit trees in full bloom. Shigar Fort is the anchor stop for the day.

Khaplu Valley, about 100 km from Skardu along the Shyok River, is the late bloom. Orchards ring Khaplu Palace, and the valley’s “Valley of Gardens” name earns itself in April. It needs an extra day or two — do not try to squeeze it into a Skardu town day.

What trees bloom in Skardu Valley?

Cherry, apricot, apple, almond, peach, plum and pear — sometimes six or seven varieties blooming at once in the last week of March. Almond opens first, then plum, then cherry and apricot together. Like Hunza, the display is mostly apricot in volume, with cherry as the famous name rather than the dominant tree. The practical advice is the same: white petals with a red calyx are apricot; the deeper pink is true cherry, and it is the rarer sight.

Skardu blossom or Hunza blossom — which should I choose?

Hunza is easier and more photographed: the KKH runs through it, the villages are close together, and the forts give you a foreground. Skardu is wilder and later: the bloom runs into May, the valleys are bigger, and the crowds are thinner. If you have one spring trip and it is late March, do Hunza. If your dates are mid-April or later, Skardu is the better bet — Hunza’s lower valley will have turned green while Chunda and Khaplu are still in flower. If you have two weeks, do both: Hunza first, then the flight or the long drive to Skardu for the second wave.

How do I get to Skardu in blossom season?

Fly or drive. Flights to Skardu operate through spring, but spring weather cancels flights more often than summer does — keep a day spare in your plan and confirm the flight the evening before. The road from Islamabad is long and the Gilgit–Skardu road can be slow after rain; the drive is part of the trip, not a transfer to rush. Once in Skardu, Chunda Valley is a short jeep ride from town, Shigar is about 30 km, and Khaplu is a full day’s drive along the Shyok — plan Khaplu as an overnight, not a day trip.

Where should I stay for blossom season in Skardu?

Stay in Skardu town for the main valley and Chunda, then overnight in Shigar or Khaplu for the late bloom. Shangrila Resort at Lower Kachura puts blossom and the lake in the same frame. Book early for late March and April — blossom season is peak domestic tourist season across the north, and the best-reviewed places fill first. See our Best Hotels in Skardu guide for where to stay.

Skardu’s blossom is spread across valleys, so the days are long drives and lakeside walks — a power bank and comfortable shoes do the heavy lifting.
