Three Killed as Rock Spire Collapses in Cappadocia — What Travellers Should Know

Three people, including a foreign national, were killed on Thursday 29 October 2026 when a rock spire collapsed in Türkiye’s UNESCO-listed Cappadocia region after a landslide triggered by heavy rain, officials said. The incident happened at 3:15pm local time in the town of Göreme, near the open-air museum, when a rock spire near a car park collapsed, sending up a huge cloud of dust. Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud noise as the rock came down.

Initial findings reported by Justice Minister Akin Gurlek put the toll at two dead and five injured; rescue teams later pulled another body from the rubble, bringing the death toll to three, according to Nevşehir Governor Hüseyin Kök. One of those killed was a foreign national and the other two were Turkish. The area was closed to the public after the collapse, according to local reports.

Cappadocia, famous for its cone-shaped “fairy chimney” rock formations created by ancient volcanic activity, is one of the world’s most visited landscapes — which is why a collapse beside a car park, in a busy visitor area, matters beyond the immediate tragedy.

What it means for travellers

The immediate lesson is weather-linked: heavy rain had triggered the landslide behind this collapse. In Cappadocia — and, by the same logic, in any landscape of soft rock, gorges or cliffs, including parts of Gilgit-Baltistan — rain changes the risk picture fast. After heavy rain, keep away from cliff bases, overhangs and recently closed areas, even if the sky has cleared, and treat any official closure as final rather than advisory.

If you are in Cappadocia now, check locally before visiting Göreme and the open-air museum area, and expect some sections to remain closed while assessments continue. If you are planning a trip, this is not a reason to cancel a Cappadocia visit outright — but it is a reason to build weather awareness into the plan, to avoid lingering beneath rock formations after rain, and to follow local guidance on the day rather than relying on a guidebook photograph.

What to watch

  • Whether further sections around Göreme stay closed, and for how long.
  • Any official statement on what triggered the landslide and whether other spires in the area are being assessed.
  • Updated visitor guidance for Cappadocia after heavy-rain events this autumn.
